Biographical Information[edit]
Frank "Buster" Burrell was a catcher who played four major league seasons, in 1891 with the New York Giants and 1895-1897 with the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. His last name was also often spelled as "Burrill".
Burrell's first prominent team was that of the John P. Lovell Arms Co., a Boston-area manufacturer, for whom he played in 1889 and 1890. After beginning the 1891 season in Salem, MA in the New England League, Burrell signed with the Giants in late July and debuted for the team on August 1 at the Polo Grounds[1]. After getting 5 hits in 15 games with the team through the end of the season, Burrell was not retained for the following season. He spent 1892 and 1893 back in the New England League, then played in Minneapolis in the Western League in 1894.
From 1895 to 1897, Burrell played in over 100 games in the National League with Brooklyn. His best season was 1896, when he hit .301 in 62 games. Afterwards he spent another decade in the minor leagues, playing exclusively in the northeast. His final season as a player was as a 40-year-old with the Lowell Tigers in 1907. He also had stints managing with Haverhill, MA in 1901 and Woonsocket, RI in 1908.
After his baseball career, Burrell resided in his hometown of Weymouth. After the death of Billy Hoy in December 1961, Burrell was the oldest living ex-major leaguer until his death the following May.
