Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Bryce Shafer pitched professionally from 2010 to 2014, peaking at Single-A. He was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 49th round of the 2010 amateur draft and was signed by scout Stan Zielinski.

Shafer had success in the early going, posting a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings for the AZL Cubs in his professional debut and a 2.63 ERA with 13 saves and 59 Ks over 54 2/3 innings between the Boise Hawks and Peoria Chiefs in 2011. His 12 saves for Boise were second in the Northwest League, behind Drew Permison's 15, and he tied Matt West for second in the league with 21 games finished, behind Permison's 24. His WHIP rose to 1.543 in 2012 and the Cubs let him go. He joined the independent Frontier League in 2013 and 2014, going a combined 2-7.

Overall, Shafer was 5-8 with a 2.99 ERA in 79 appearances in the Cubs chain. He averaged nearly a K per inning. In indy ball, he was 2-7 with a 5.59 ERA in 55 games (5 starts); his K/9 IP ratio was 9.8, though his WHIP was 1.700.

He later became head coach at Kankakee Community College.
