Biographical Information[edit]

Brian Ralph played in the minors and for Team USA.

He hit .390 and slugged .616 as a junior at Harvard, finishing 4th in the Ivy League in average, tying Andrew Huling for the hit lead (64) and leading in runs (55) and steals (24). He was named All-Ivy as an outfielder and won Player of the Year. [1] He slugged .703 and hit .347 as a senior and was named All-League again. [2] His 10 homers were tied for the Harvard single-season record as of 2013. [3] He signed with the Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1998, and he hit .279/.401/.344 in 64 games.

Ralph improved to .322/.402/.429 for the Schaumburg Flyers in 1999 with 73 runs in 84 games and 42 steals in 51 tries, and he also had a .167/.273/.229 batting line in 16 games for the Hickory Crawdads affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was 9th in the Northern League East in average (between Troy Fortin and Chris Schwab), 8th in OBP (between Steve Hine and Johnny Knott), tied Brandon Evans for the run lead, trailed only Brent Sachs in triples (7) and led in swipes (5 ahead of Evans). He was named an All-Star outfielder alongside Bryan Warner and Chris Vasquez. [4]

He then represented the USA in the 1999 Intercontinental Cup, batting .194/.359/.194 with 8 walks and 4 steals in 9 games as the only center fielder the US employed that event. He tied Joon-hyung Ahn ‎ for second in steals, one behind Yobal Dueñas. He was also second in walks, one shy of Adam Burton. [5] In 2000, hit .228/.309/.309 in 77 games for the Daytona Cubs in the Chicago Cubs system, and he also had a .325/.464/.383 batting line in 33 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers' Vero Beach Dodgers affiliate. Ralph returned to the independent leagues in 2001, and he recorded a .261/.327/.313 batting line for the Flyers and he announced his retirement. He had batted .278/.374/.356 in 326 games as a pro, with 224 runs and 112 steals in 145 tries.
