Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Brandon Young was undrafted coming out of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2020, when the draft was limited to just five rounds by the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many others in his situation, he had to sign at a discount, hooking up with the Baltimore Orioles on June 14th, and then having to wait until 2021 to begin his professional career, as the minor leagues were shut down.

After a good first professional season when he went 4-3, 3.52 in 23 games mostly as a starter between Class A and High-A, he had two injury-filled seasons in 2022 and 2023. During the first one, he made just 3 starts for the AA Bowie BaySoxbefore having to undergo Tommy John surgery, and in 2023 he was 0-5, 4.50 in 11 starts spread out among four different levels. He was finally able to resume a normal routine in 2024, when he went 5-6, 2.57 in 27 games between Bowie and the AAA Norfolk Tides.

In 2025, he started the season with Norfolk, before being called up to make his debut with the Orioles on April 19th when he started against the Cincinnati Reds and gave up 3 runs in 4 innings. He made another start for the Birds before being sent back to AAA, but was placed on the injured list a week later, then making a couple of starts in High-A with the Aberdeen IronBirds. he had been back with Norfolk for less than a week when he was called up to Baltimore again, starting against the Texas Rangers on June 25th. He stayed in the starting rotation after that, but after a loss on July 22nd, his record stood at 0-5, 7.34 in 7 starts. He pitched better in his next two starts, but without a decision, and was roughed up again on August 9th, giving up 6 runs in 3 innings to The Athletics to fall to 0-6, 6.70. The Orioles would have been justified to send him back to Norfolk at that point, but given the ball once more on August 15th, he turned in a gem to earn the first win of his career. Against the Houston Astros, he was perfect through seven innings before allowing an infield single to former teammate Ramon Urias with two outs in the 8th, a dribbler left of the mound that he fielded bare-handed, but on which he could not make a good throw to first base. He then struck out Taylor Trammell to end the inning and turned the ball over to the bullpen, who completed the 7-0 win.
