Biographical Information

Billy Steinwender was a college baseball player and coach. He played second base for the Princeton University team from 1899 to 1902, captaining the team in his final season. He then coached at West Point in 1903 before playing for Los Angeles in the Pacific National League, where he hit .307 for his only recorded professional stint.

He was reported as playing under the name Billy Evans for the Belleville Maroons of the semipro Illinois-Missouri Trolley League in 1909 and 1910. He was the vice president of the Steinwender Distilling company when he died of stomach cancer in 1913. The local papers noted after his death that the company had taken out "one of the largest policies in St. Louis" with life insurance totaling over $120,000 (about $4 million in 2026).
