Biographical Information[edit]

William H. "Bill" Hollander, widely known as "Dutch" Hollander, was a professional player and college coach. He attended Georgetown University, where he was a two-sport athlete in baseball and basketball.[1] He later took a prominent early role at Stetson University, where university records credit him with a 26-11 basketball coaching record from 1915 to 1917, a 21-11-2 baseball coaching record in 1916 and 1917, and a varsity letter at shortstop in 1916 and 1916-1916 in basketball.[2][3][4] A contemporary report in The Florida Times-Union noted Hollander taking on the Stetson job after being injured at Fort Worth in a spiking incident.[5]

Hollander's known professional playing career began with the Scranton Miners of the New York State League in 1911. He returned to organized baseball with the Montgomery Rebels of the Southern Association in 1914, then played for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International League and the Albany Senators of the New York State League in 1915. He was with the Fort Worth Panthers of the Texas League in 1916 and 1917, also appeared for the Fort Smith Twins of the Western Association in 1917, played for the Oakland Oaks in 1918, and finished his listed career with the Sacramento Senators in 1920, both in the Pacific Coast League.

Stetson later inducted him into its athletics hall of fame.[6] After his athletic career he practiced law in Oakland, California, where he was remembered as a former ballplayer and baseball enthusiast. He died in San Francisco, CA on February 22, 1947, at age 55.[7][8]
