Biographical Information

Austin Bergner has pitched four seasons at AAA through 2025.

Bergner was 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA for the US in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup, striking out 14 in 8 2/3 IP. He beat the Czech Republic's Martin Bareš and South Korea's Young-ha Lee to tie for the event lead in wins, as the US took the title. He was rated the #38 prospect in the 2016 amateur draft by Perfect Game but fell to the 38th round due to his strong college commitment; he was picked by the Boston Red Sox.

Going on to college, he was 4-2 with a save and a 3.00 ERA as a freshman in 2017. He was 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League; he won the ERA title by .49 over Kris Bubic. Baseball America rated him as the #11 prospect in the Cape Cod League, between Zack Hess and Shea Langeliers. He went 7-3 with a save and a 4.25 ERA in 2018, fanning 84 in 82 2/3 IP, and appeared in the 2018 College World Series. He tied for 7th in the Atlantic Coast Conference in wins. Back with Chatham that summer, he had a 2-1, 2.38 record. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected him in the 32nd round of the 2018 amateur draft and he again did not sign.

As a junior, he fell to 6-1, 4.94. The Detroit Tigers chose him in the 9th round of the 2019 amateur draft and signed for a $157,200 bonus. He split the summer between the GCL Tigers West (0-1, 6.35 in 4 G) and the Connecticut Tigers (0-2, Sv, 6.33 in 11 G). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he was with the Lakeland Flying Tigers (2-2, Sv, 4.44 in 10 G) and West Michigan Whitecaps (4-0, 2.90). He struck out 110 in 83 1/3 innings that summer. He was 4th in the Tigers system in whiffs, between Beau Brieske and Adam Wolf.

Bergner split 2022 between the Erie SeaWolves (4-2, 2.38 in 19 G) and Toledo Mud Hens (1-3, 6.91 in 8 G). He struck out 121 in 119 1/3 IP, again finishing fourth in the Detroit farm system. In '23, he was again with Erie (6-2, 2 Sv, 4.41 in 28 G) and Toledo (1-3, 8.34 in 9 G), with 94 K in 73 2/3 IP. 2024 was more of the same: pitching well for AA Erie (3-2, 2.34 in 10 G) but struggling with AAA Toledo (0-1, 9.68 in 10 G); he also pitched 3 games for West Michigan (0-1, 1.00). He had 108 strikeouts in 89 2/3 IP, finishing 9th in the organization in K.

The tall Floridian had a 2.95 ERA for the Cangrejeros de Santurce in the 2025 Caribbean Series. 2025 continued his recent trend - 8-7 with a save and a 3.07 ERA for Erie, 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA for Toledo. He tied for third in the Tigers system in victories, behind Garrett Burhenn and RJ Petit. He was 2-2 with a 3.13 ERA for Santurce, whiffing 29 in 23 IP. He tied José De León for 10th in the Puerto Rican League in strikeouts. He then made the Colombian national team roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, one of two US natives on the roster (alongside Rio Gomez).
