Biographical Information[edit]

Andy Vargas has pitched in Cuba and for the Cuban national team.

He debuted with the Industriales in the 2018-2019 Serie Nacional, retiring one of four batters and yielding three runs. He didn't retire any of four batters in 2019-2020 and gave up four runs. After those seasons, a 13.50 ERA in 14 games in 2020-2021 marked major progress. He then went 6-4 with 9 saves and a 5.02 ERA in 2022-2023 but was 0-2 with a save and a 7.71 ERA in the postseason. [1] He was 4th in the league with 34 appearances and tied Luis Fonseca for 7th in saves. In the Cuban Elite League, he had 3 saves and a 0.47 ERA despite 17 walks in 19 1/3 IP for the Portuarios. He tied Noelvis Entenza and Yankiel Mauris for 7th in saves.

Vargas had a 8.40 ERA in the 2022 U-23 Baseball World Cup, losing to South Korea's Dong-hyun Sung and saved Randy Cueto's win over Germany. [2] He allowed two runs in 4 1/3 IP in the 2022 Caribbean Baseball Cup, teaming with José R. Rodríguez and Yeudis Reyes to four-hit the US Virgin Islands. He tied for 3rd in the Cup with 3 appearances but also tied for 5th with 6 walks. [3] In the 2023 Caribbean Series, he was 1-1 with two unearned runs in 6 2/3 IP for the Agricultores de Granma y Las Tunas. He beat the WildCats KJ74' Shairon Martis in the Series opener, spoiling the Caribbean Series debut by a team from Curaçao. Against the Indios de Mayagüez, he pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th but yielded two in the 9th to lose to Braden Webb.

The right-hander was 6-4 with a save and a 2.86 ERA for the Industriales in 2023-2024. He struck out 10 in 5 2/3 IP in the 2024 Premier 12, with a 1.59 ERA, getting the win over Australia's Blake Townsend (Raidel Martínez saved it). Despite being a reliever, he led Cuba in Ks (two ahead of Yoennis Yera) and had their only win of the event. [4]
