Biographical Information[edit]
Al Neiger appeared in 6 games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960. In the minors from 1959 to 1963 he had a record of 43-32.
Neiger was at the University of Delaware at the same time as Lee Elia, who became the Phillies manager more than a quarter century after Neiger was with them. Al was an All-American there in 1959, one year before he came to the majors, at a time when only two pitchers nationally got that honor. While Neiger broke into the majors in 1960, Elia would not do so (as a player) until 1966.
He was a standout pitcher in both high school and college in Delaware, setting records.
Neiger majored in mechanical engineering in college, and after 1963 retired from baseball to work 39 years at NVF Co. in Delaware. After that he was an executive at Thermal Seal Experts.
He was named to the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame as well as the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame.
His son-in-law Dave Whitcraft was an All-American soccer player at the University of Delaware.
