Akira Shiobara played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.
Shiobara signed with the Yomiuri Giants in 1960, and he was 0-for-14 in his first season. When Masataka Tsuchiya left the team in 1961, he shared the starting second base job with Shin Fujimoto, and he hit .276/.303/.354 in 48 games. Shiobara went 6-for-16 in the 1961 Nippon Series to help the Giants beat the Nankai Hawks, and he won the outstanding player award, a step below the MVP, which went to Toshio Miyamoto. However, he slumped to .182/.213/.278 in 1962, and he played 82 games with a .207/.238/.310 batting line in 1963. Shiobara's batting line was .211/.256/.238 in 1964, then he batted .245/.279/.330 in 1965. When Shozo Doi joined the team, Shiobara lost his spot and he slumped to .167/.211/.208 in 58 games. He was 7-for-36 in 1967, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Shiobara hit .210/.244/.283 with 179 hits and 10 homers in 8 seasons in NPB.
