The 1901 Detroit Tigers were the original edition of the team, as the American League played its first season as a major league that season. However, the Tigers were already members of the circuit in 1900, when the circuit was still a minor league. They started the season on a hitting barrage, scoring 48 runs in their first 5 games and 50 over their first 6. No other Tigers team has matched these numbers, the closest being the 1929 and 2015 editions, which both scored 47 runs over their first 6 games. The barrage included wins by scores of 14-13, in the team's first-ever game against the Milwaukee Brewers on [[April 25]th, 13-9, and 12-11. As those scores show, the team's pitching was not quite so impressive as its hitting, although that would change over the course of the year: the Tigers ended up in third place in the AL, with a record of 74-61, and allowed the third-fewest runs in the league, while scoring only the 5th most (out of 8 teams).
