Biographical Information[edit]
Yoshiji Yamamoto played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.
Yamamoto signed with the Nankai Hawks in 1954, and he had a 5.63 ERA in 7 appearances in his first season. His ERA was 5.14 in 6 games in 1955, and he went 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA in 1956. Yamamoto then jumped to the Daiei Stars, and he struggled again as he was 0-6 with a 5.43 ERA in 1957. He was released after that season, and the Toei Flyers signed him. Yamamoto went 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA in 1958, and he improved to 8-8 with a 3.08 ERA in 1959. He had a 8-13 record with a 3.22 ERA in 1960, and he was 6th in losses in the Pacific League (tied with Haruhisa Ando). Yamamoto went 5-4 with a 2.96 ERA in 1961, and he was 0-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 1962. His ERA rose to 5.18 in 23 appearances in 1963, and he bounced back with a 2.36 ERA in 19 relief outings in 1964. Yamamoto then had a 2-4 record with a 2.53 ERA in 1965, and his ERA was 4.50 in 22 games in 1966. He went to the Hankyu Braves in 1967, but he allowed 4 runs in 1 1/3 innings and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Yamamoto was 33-47 with a 3.58 ERA, struck out 501 and pitched 854 2/3 innings in 14 seasons in NPB.
