Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Yohendrick Piñango was signed by the Chicago Cubs as an international amateur free agent on July 2, 2018. He made his professional debut one year later with the DSL Cubs 1, hitting .358 in 62 games with no homers, 36 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. He was named a mid-season All-Star in the Dominican Summer League.
After this promising debut, he had to put his career on hold for a year as the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In 2021, hem spent time with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Low-A East and the South Bend Cubs of the High-A Central. He hit .276 in 108 games and was named a Cubs organizational All-Star. In 2022, he spent a full season with South Bend, with the circuit having regained its historic "Midwest League" name. He hit .250 in 115 games with 13 homers and 63 RBIs, as he had added some muscle since his debut in the DSL as a scrawny 17-year-old. In 2023, he repeated the level, batting .247 but with just 6 homers and 45 RBIs.
If the Cubs were concerned about his lack of progress in 2023, he settled them down with a great start to his 2024 season, as he hit .340 in his first 29 games at South Bend. That earned him a promotion to the Tennessee Smokies of the Southern League on May 14th. He hit .223 in 55 games there, until on July 31st he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays along with IF Josh Rivera in return for P Nate Pearson. He finished the season still in AA, now with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Eastern League, where he hit .179 in 33 games. Combined, his batting line for the season was .239/.331/.389 in 117 games with 10 homers and 51 RBIs. In 2025, he solved AA pitching, as he batted .298 in 47 games with New Hampshire then was promoted to the AAA Buffalo Bisons. He batted .235 in 84 games there. He had first played winter ball for the Cardenales de Lara in his native Venezuela after the 2024 season, but after 2025, he was outstanding there, batting .363 with 8 homers and 31 RBIs in 24 games.
Coming off his great winter league season, he played well in spring training in 2026, although he had little chance of making the Blue Jays given how many experienced outfielders they had on hand. He returned to Buffalo where he was hitting .288 with 3 homers after 22 games when he got the call to Toronto. That came following an injury to OF Nathan Lukes, the third to a major league outfielder following those to Addison Barger and George Springer. He made his debut as the starting left fielder against the Cleveland Guardians on April 26th. He went 1 for 2 in the game, his first major league hit being a single off Slade Cecconi in the 4th inning, before being replaced by pinch-hitter Myles Straw in the 6th. He got off to a great start at the plate, with 9 hits in his first 18 at-bats through 7 games. He was sent back to Buffalo on May 9th, when Barger was reactivated from the injured list, having batted .423 in 10 games. His problem was not his performance, but the fact that the Jays had too many left-handed-hitting outfielders. He did not get a chance to play a single game at Buffalo before he was called back to the majors when Barger injured himself in his first game back.
