Yasushi Tsuruta played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.
Tsuruta was 8-2 with a 2.07 ERA in his college career, and he was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the 2nd round of the 1992 NPB draft. He went 7-11 with a 3.47 ERA in 1993, and he was 6th in losses in the Central League (tied with Masaki Saito and Kazuhisa Kawaguchi). He was the first local pitcher to be struck out five times in a game on September 7. Tsuruta was 2-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 1994, and he missed most of the next four seasons due to right elbow injury. He was 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 1999, and he allowed a run in 1/3 of an inning in the 1999 Nippon Series Game 3; the Dragons lost to the Daiei Hawks in 5 games. Tsuruta slumped to a 5.28 ERA in 14 games in 2000, and he was traded to the Hiroshima Carp for Makoto Kito. He then went 4-3 with a 2.47 ERA in 2001, but he struggled in 2002 as he had a 4-6 record with a 6.07 ERA. Tsuruta was 2-3 with a 4.22 ERA in 2003, and he announced his retirement after he allowed 3 runs in 3 2/3 innings in 2004.
Overall, Tsuruta was 21-32 with a 4.17 ERA, struck out 323 and pitched 416 1/3 innings in 9 seasons in NPB.
