Sota was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in the 3rd round of the 1977 NPB draft, but he refused to sign. He then signed with the Chunichi Dragons in 1980, and he was 5-4 with a 3.70 ERA in his first season. The Dragons then traded him with Yasunori Oshima to the Nippon Ham Fighters for Tomio Tanaka and Tatsuo Omiya, but he failed to return to the top team in 1988 and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Sota was 11-15 with a 4.24 ERA, struck out 134 and pitched 258 2/3 innings in 7 seasons in NPB.
