Biographical Information[edit]
William McAndrew was a professional first baseman in the Kitty League and later a long-time coach and athletic administrator in Carbondale, IL. He played professionally with the Vincennes Alices, and league accounts show that he took over the Clarksville Volunteers during the 1910 season.[1] A 1915 newspaper profile identified him as the same "Billy" known from his Kitty League days and noted that he was then in Carbondale, where he coached the local high school basketball team to fourth place in the Illinois state tournament.[2]
A graduate of Vincennes University who later earned an LL.B. from Cumberland University, McAndrews taught at Lawrenceville Township High School and Vincennes University before helping build the men's athletics program at Southern Illinois Normal University.[3][4] The Pantagraph reported in 1920 that he was returning to Carbondale as athletic director after World War I service as a military instructor at the University of Chicago with the rank of captain.[5] Southern Illinois later credited him as the school's first baseball coach, serving from 1921 through 1924.[6] He remained one of the central figures in the school's athletics department for decades and died in Carbondale in 1943.[7]
