Lewis Warren Burtis

Biographical Information[edit]

Warren Burtis was an umpire in the first two seasons of the National League, in 1876 and 1877, working a total of 25 games. There are allegations that his career ended because of involvement in a gambling scandal.

The date long associated with his death seems to be a mistake as the person who died on November 4, 1911 in Chicago, IL was Louis (not Lewis) Burtis, a different person who operated a boarding house. Other sources state that he died in 1921 in New York, not far from the town where he was born, although this still needs final confirmation.
