Biographical Information[edit]
Walter "Wally" Marks was a multi-sport athlete and coach who was affiliated with Indiana State University for 44 years. A graduate of the University of Chicago, he was a sophomore fullback on the school's last Big 10 championship team in 1924 and served as team captain in 1926 under legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.
Marks also pitched for the Canton Terriers and Fort Wayne Chiefs in 1928, and Danville Veterans in 1931.[1][2]
At Indiana State, Marks served as the head coach for four different sports: football (19 years, 62–56–7), baseball (15 years), basketball (9 years, 90–58), and golf (9 years). Beyond coaching, he was a prominent Big 10 football official for 16 years, notably officiating the 1960 Rose Bowl.
He transitioned into university administration, becoming the Chairman of the Men's Physical Education Department in 1952 and later the Dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation in 1965. Following his retirement in 1971, Indiana State named its track and field and cross country facility Marks Field in his honor. He was inducted into the Indiana State University Athletics Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 1982.[3]
