Biographical Information[edit]
Tsutomu Tamura pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.
Tamura was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers in the 4th round of the 1990 NPB draft, and he collected 4 saves with a 3.77 ERA in 50 appearances in 1991. He was 2nd in appearances in the Central League, tied with Koichi Morita. Tamura improved to a 1.10 ERA with 14 saves in 24 appearances in 1992 before an elbow injury ended his season in July, and he was 5th in saves (between Hiroshi Ishige and Naoyuki Naito). He collected 22 saves with a 2.50 ERA in 30 relief outings in 1993, and he was 3rd in saves (8 behind Ishige). However, he suffered from injuries in 1994, so he only pitched 11 games that season and missed the entire 1995 season.
The Shizuoka native came back in 1996, and he had a 1.16 ERA in 40 appearances. Tamura then pitched 50 games with a 2.86 ERA in 1997, but he missed the 1998 season because of shoulder injury. He recorded a 4.64 ERA in 40 games in 1999, but he stayed in the minors in 2000 and the Tigers released him. The Orix BlueWave signed him, and Tamura's ERA was 4.74 in 39 relief outings in 2001. He only got 2 appearances in 2002, and he announced his retirement. Tamura later became an assistant coach for the Osaka University of Commerce.
Overall, Tamura was 13-12 with a 2.90 ERA and 54 saves, struck out 260 and pitched 257 2/3 innings in 9 seasons in NPB.
