Biographical Information[edit]

Toru Shibuya played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.

Shibuya was drafted by the Hiroshima Carp in the 2nd round of the 1969 NPB draft, and he spent his first two seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues. He recorded a .300/.395/.471 batting line in 82 plate appearances in 1972, and he played 89 games with a .233/.313/.322 batting line in 1973; as a backup OF/1B, he had a career-high 163 PA. Shibuya slumped to .165/.205/.266 in 1974, and the Carp traded him with Makoto Kamigochi to the Nippon Ham Fighters for Tsuyoshi Oshita. He hit .242/.296/.303 in 41 games in 1975, but he only got 2 at-bats in 1976. Shibuya then played 61 games with a .231/.325/.352 batting line as their backup first baseman in 197, and he went 0-for-8 in 1978. He hit .295/.380/.523 in 26 games in 1980, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Shibuya hit .233/.311/.348 with 122 hits and 14 homers in 587 plate appearances spread over 305 games and 8 seasons in NPB.
