Tomoya Kakinuma has played in Nippon Pro Baseball.
Kakinuma was drafted by the Chiba Lotte Marines in the 2nd round of the development phase in the 2015 NPB draft; the scout was Shingo Ono. He stayed in the NPB Farm Leagues in his first season, and he represented Japan in the 2016 U-23 Baseball World Cup. He hit .174/.345/.174 but with 8 runs in 9 games, throwing out 3 of 5 who tried to steal to help Japan take the title. He led the event in putouts and tied for the most runners caught stealing. He was 0-for-8 in 2017, and he only got 2 at-bats in 2018. Kakinuma then went 9-for-54 in 2019, and he was the main backup catcher behind Tatsuhiro Tamura in 2020. Kakinuma recorded a .160/.219/.170 batting line in 56 games that season, and he struggled again in 2021 at the plate as his batting line was .158/.158/.158 in 34 games in 2022. He was 3-for-29 in 2023, and he only played 3 games combined in the next two seasons. The Marines then released him, and he signed with the Yakult Swallows.
