Biographical Information[edit]

Tomoharu Fukushima was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in the 5th round of the 1972 NPB draft, and he stayed in the minors in his first four seasons. He only played 2 games for the big club in 1977, and he was named Yomiuri's starting catcher after Takashi Yoshida was injured. Fukushima set the NPB record for highest CS% with .633 (broken by Atsuya Furuta in 1993), and he hit .226/.273/.290 in 82 games. However, his spot was taken by Kazuhiro Yamakura, so he only got 51 at-bats combined in the next five seasons. The Giants traded him to the Lotte Orions in 1983, and he was 2-for-12 in 1984. He didn't reach the big club in 1985, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Fukushima hit .229/.286/.293 with 43 hits in 7 seasons in NPB.
