Biographical Information

Tetsuro Nishida played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Nishida was taken by the Rakuten Golden Eagles in the second round of the 2009 NPB draft. He hit only .190 in the minors in 2010. In 2011, he got into one game for the big club, fanning against Atsushi Okamoto in his lone at-bat. In 2012, the Osaka native got his first NPB hit, off Tatsuya Sato. He was 3 for 22 with a walk, HBP, two runs and a RBI that season with Rakuten, backing up at 2B, SS and 3B. He was Rakuten's #3 shortstop (behind Kazuo Matsui and Tatsuro Iwasaki) in 2013, hitting .167/.200/.188 in 52 plate appearances and fielding .960 at SS. He was unused in the 2013 Japan Series as Rakuten won its first title. In game one of the 2013 Asia Series, though, he started at short and drove in two runs in a win over the EDA Rhinos.

The Osaka native was named Rakuten's starting shortstop in 2014, and he played 131 games with a .250/.300/.358 batting line. He then missed about half of the 2015 season due to a left foot injury, and he recorded a .220/.268/.280 batting line in 62 games. Nishida struggled in 2016, and he was 2-for-20 while staying in the minors for nearly the entire season. He went 3-for-22 in 2017, and the Golden Eagles traded him to the Softbank Hawks for Ayatsugu Yamashita. Nishida had a .211/.216/.349 batting line in 72 games in 2018, and he went 1-for-9 in the 2018 Nippon Series; the Hawks beat the Hiroshima Carp in 6 games. He then went 1-for-8 in 2019, and he was 1-for-11 in 36 games in 2020 then he announced his retirement.

Overall, Nishida hit .219/.262/.309 with 171 hits and 13 homers in 10 seasons in NPB.
