Tennessee is a state located in the southeastern United States, between the Mississippi River which forms its western border, and the Appalachian Mountains to the east. Its capital is Nashville, TN and its biggest city is Memphis, TN although the two are of very similar size. Both of these cities hosted Negro League teams at various times, including during the period that these teams were playing in leagues that are now considered major leagues. However, there had never been a regular season game featuring either a National League or American League team played in the state until 2025, when MLB organized the MLB Speedway Classic at the famed Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN, right on the border of Virginia, on August 2nd. In addition, the city of Nashville is considered to be the leading candidate to be awarded an expansion franchise by MLB whenever the next expansion takes place.
The state has a long history of minor league baseball however, including in AAA where both Nashville and Memphis currently host teams. The two teams were mainstays of both the Southern Association and its successor, the Southern League, for the first six decades of the 20th century, and Knoxville, TN has hosted a Southern League team since 1980, and other teams for decades before that. The South Atlantic League and the Appalachian League were also present in the state for long periods, and past leagues based in the state include the Tennessee-Alabama League and the Alabama-Tennessee League, as well as the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee League (better known as the "Kitty League"). College baseball is also very present in the state, with both the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University having won the NCAA Division I College World Series in the 21st Century.
