Biographical Information[edit]

Taneo Okumiya played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.

Okumiya was drafted by the Sankei Atoms in the 3rd round of the 1967 NPB draft, and he only got 4 at-bats in his first season. He was 8-for-26 in 1969, and he went 1-for-10 in 1970. Okumiya was the main backup catcher behind Akihiko Oya in 1971, and he hit .167/.265/.167 in 25 games. He then recorded a .234/.330/.325 batting line in 1972, and he played 37 games with a .133/.200/.217 batting line in 1973. Okumiya only had 22 at-bats combined in the next four seasons, and he was traded to the Taiheiyo Club Lions for cash. He hit .262/.354/.345 in 53 games in 1978, and he had a 7-for-40 record in 1979. Okumiya didn't reach the top team in 1980, and he announced his retirement. He later coached in the Lions system from 1980 to 1985 and from 1991 to 1993, then he became the minor league battery coach for the Hanshin Tigers from 1995 to 1997 and for the Nippon Ham Fighters in 1999. He also coached Higashi Chikushi Gakuen High School from 2014 to 2018.

Overall, Okumiya hit .204/.283/.269 with 72 hits in 11 seasons in NPB.
