Biographical Information[edit]
Takahiro Shimotsuma was drafted by the Rakuten Golden Eagles in the 4th round of the 2012 NPB draft, but he only played 5 games combined for the big club in his first four seasons as a backup catcher; he didn't get any at-bats. Shimotsuma also represented Japan in the 2016 U-23 Baseball World Cup, going 2 for 3 with a walk, double, 3 runs and a RBI, backing up Tomoya Kakinuma for the champs. He was 1-for-10 in 2017, and he returned to the minors in the next two seasons. Shimotsumahit .156/.165/.247 in 43 games in 2020, and he announced his retirement after he had a 4-for-23 record in 2021. He became the minor league battery coach for Rakuten in 2025.
