Biographical Information[edit]

Susumu Kato played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.

Kato signed with the Chunichi Dragons in 1949, and he played 48 games with a .235/.333/.370 batting line in his first season. He crushed 5 homers with a .206/.321/.375 batting line in 1950, and he recorded a .209/.321/.269 batting line in 1951. Kato returned to catcher (from the outfield) in 1952, and he batted .218/.315/.261 in 73 games that season. He had a .220/.304/.254 batting line in 75 games as Akira Noguchi's backup in 1953, but he lost his spot after Yasuhiko Kawai joined the team in 1954. Kato went 16-for-64 that season, and he only got 17 more at-bats before he announced his retirement in 1957. He coached the Dragons from 1958 to 1959 and from 1963 to 1964.

Overall, Kato hit .217/.315/.293 with 167 hits and 7 homers in 8 seasons in NPB.
