Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Grandy was a lost player for over a century. He played a single game in the majors, as a pinch-runner for the St. Louis Cardinals in a game against the Brooklyn Superbas on August 23, 1907. His presence in the game was noted at the time in newspapers from both St. Louis and Brooklyn, but for some reason, his name was not included in official statistics compiled by the National League and he fell into oblivion.
However, Grandy's participation in the game was re-discovered by researcher Clifford Blau in 2025. Further digging made it clear that the name Steve Grandy was a pseudonym and that in real life, he went by Stanley Zukowski. His obituary was published under that name in 1946, and mentioned that he had once played for the Cardinals. He was the third new player from either the National League or the American League in the 20th Century to be discovered in recent decades, following Norm Glaser in 2007 and Verne Blackbourn only a couple of months before Grandy.
