He attended Moeller High School in Cincinnati, OH and was at the University of Texas at the same time as Brooks Kieschnick and J.D. Smart. The New York Times of April 25, 1992 reported that Stephen had a heart condition that raised concern whether he could play ball safely, and he had to sign a waiver before university officials would allow him to play.
