Biographical Information

Pitcher Spencer Arrighetti was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 6th round of the 2021 amateur draft from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, after having previously attended Navarro College and Texas Christian University. Born in New Mexico, he had gone to high school in Katy, TX. In 2023, he went 9-7, 4.40 in 28 games between the AA Corpus Christi Hooks and AAA Sugar Land Space Cowboys to be named an Astros organizational All-Star.

he made his major league debut on April 10, 2024 as the starting pitcher for the Astros against the Kansas City Royals; he was the second pitcher to make his debut as the starter for Houston in the span of a few days, following Blair Henley who had done so two days earlier, as a result of an injury to Framber Valdez. He managed to hold down the Royals for a couple of innings before things cratered in the 3rd when Kansas City scored 7 runs against him. He was charged with the 11-2 loss. He kept his spot in the rotation all year, and after going 4-7, 5.63 in 17 starts in the first half, pitched much better after the All-Star break, coinciding with the Astros climbing into first place. On August 28th, he pitched the best game of his young career against the Philadelphia Phillies, starting off with seven hitless innings before Austin Hays scratched an infield single to start the 8th. He gave up a second hit before leaving the game later that inning, but received credit for a 10-0 win, helped by a trio of homers by slugger Yordan Alvarez. He also struck out 11 batters in the game. He was named the American League Rookie of the Month for August after posting a 1.95 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings during the month. On September 16th, he was the pitcher who managed to stop Luis Arráez's streak of not striking out in 141 plate appearances, the longest in two decades. It took a nine-pitch battle before Spencer got the San Diego Padres hitter to swing and miss to end the at-bat. He ended the year at7-13, 4.53 in 29 games (28 starts) and 145 innings. He did not appear in the postseason as Houston was swept in two games by the Detroit Tigers in the Wild Card Series.

After a promising debut season, he was slowed down by injuries in 2025. He was placed on the injured list in early April after making just two starts, due to a broken right thumb, and only returned in early August. He made 5 more starts that month but returned to the IL on September 3rd with inflammation in his right elbow and was only activated when the season was over. He finished with a record of 1-5 and an ERA of 5.35, his only win having come in his first start of the season against the New York Mets on March 29th. Things went a lot better in 2026 as he was 3-0, 2.00 in 3 starts in April and March, and then was named the American League Pitcher of the Month in May when he went 4-1, 0.93 in 5 starts. As a result he had already tied his career high for wins in a season before June had even started.
