Biographical Information[edit]

Shinji Shimoyama played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years.

Shimoyama was drafted by the Kintetsu Buffaloes in the 8th round of the 2002 NPB draft, and he had a .302/.380/.556 batting line in 32 games in his first season. He then hit .283/.359/.467 in 43 games in 2004, and the Buffaloes merged with the Orix BlueWave after that season. Shinoyama played 58 games with a .230/.284/.459 batting line in 2005, and he recorded a .282/.345/.500 batting line in 2006. He then secured a starting spot in the outfield in 2007, and he batted .244/.304/.358 with 7 homers. Shimoyama crushed 10 homers with a .270/.344/.438 batting line in 2008, and he got a career-high 13 homers with a .256/.348/.467 batting line in 2009. However, he slumped to .213/.276/.313 in 2010, and he missed most of the 2011 season because he tore his Achilles' tendon. He only got 14 appearances that season, and he announced his retirement. Shimoyama then became the minor league fielding coach for Orix from 2012 to 2015, and he was their batting coach in 2016. He was named the batting coach for their top team from 2017 to 2019. As a scout for Orix, he signed Riku Miyaguni, Taito Takashima and Kaisei Toumatsu.

Overall, Shimoyama hit .260/.332/.430 with 358 hits and 45 homers in 9 seasons in NPB.
