Biographical Information[edit]
Submariner Shigeru Matsubayashi was drafted by the Hiroshima Carp in the 2nd round of the 1972 NPB draft, and he had a 5.73 ERA in 13 games in 1973. He was 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA in 1974, and the Carp traded him with Tetsuo Yoneyama to the Taiheiyo Club Lions for Satoru Miwa and Masaji Nishizawa. Matsubayashi's ERA was 3.74 in 20 relief outings in 1975, and he recorded a 4.17 ERA in 20 appearances in 1976. The Lions then traded him to the Masafumi Takeda, but he only pitched 4 more games for the big club before he announced his retirement in 1978.
Overall, Matsubayashi was 4-5 with a 3.94 ERA, struck out 93 and pitched 192 1/3 innings in 5 seasons in NPB.
