Biographical Information[edit]
Shigeharu Asai played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.
Asai signed with the Osaka Tigers in 1960, but he stayed in the NPB Farm Leagues primarily in his first first three seasons; he only got 58 at-bats combined for the big club. He won the competition with Frank Jaciuk for the starting third baseman spot in 1963, and he hit .223/.257/.307 in 108 games that season. Asai then crushed 11 homers with a .243/.290/.376 batting line in 1964, and he went 3-for-17 in the 1964 Nippon Series. The Tigers lost to the Nankai Hawks in 7 games. Asai then blasted 10 homers with a .224/.252/.365 batting line in 1965, and he played 130 games with a .256/.282/.346 batting line in 1966. The Shizuoka native slumped to .194/.244/.262 in 1967, and the Tigers traded him to the Hiroshima Carp for cash. Asai struggled again in 1968 as his batting line was .201/.230/.299, and he hit .209/.237/.305 in 126 games in 1969. He went 19-for-71 in 1970, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Asai hit .224/.258/.330 with 579 hits and 57 homers in 11 seasons in NPB.
