Biographical Information[edit]

Seranthony Domínguez was originally signed by Philadelphia Phillies scout Koby Perez. He reached the majors with the Phillies in 2018 and played for them during six seasons, missing all of the COVID-19 season in 2020 due to an elbow injury that necessitated Tommy John surgery.

He had 16 saves as a rookie in 2018, but none in his second season in 2019. From 2021 to 2024, his best season in terms of saves was 2022, when he recorded 9 (to be fair, he pitched only once in 2021). He pitched in the postseason for the Phils in both 2022 and 2023. That first season included earning credit for the win in Game 1 of the World Series against the Houston Astros on October 28th. In that game, he came in in relief of Ranger Suarez with the score tied at 5 and a runner on base in the bottom of the 8th and proceeded to retire the next two batters to end the inning, and then to pitch a scoreless 9th. J.T. Realmuto led off the top of the 10th with a homer off Luis Garcia and David Robertson pitched the bottom of the 10th to earn the save. He also earned another win in the Division Series against the Atlanta Braves, and a save in the NLCS against the San Diego Padres, as he made a total of 9 appearances and pitched 10 1/3 innings. In the 2023 Postseason, he made another 6 appearances, giving up just 1 unearned run in 5 1/3 innings.

He struggled during the first half of the 2024 season, going 3-2, 4.75 in 38 games and was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on July 26th along with OF Cristian Pache in return for OF Austin Hays. It was a rare deadline deal between first-place teams, where both were trading players from areas of surplus in return for needed parts. Interestingly, the two same teams made a similar deal three days later, when it was another reliever, Gregory Soto, who went to the Orioles in return for a couple of minor leaguers. Seranthony was installed as Baltimore's closer for the stretch run, taking over for Craig Kimbrel, and did pretty well, recording 10 saves while going 0-2, 3.97 in 25 games. He pitched in the postseason for the third straight year, keeping a clean sheet in 1 2/3 innings as the O's were swept by the Kansas City Royals in the Wild Card Series.

He was back with Baltimore at the start of 2025 and again pitched pretty well, although now in a supporting role. In 43 games, he went 2-3, 3.24 with 2 saves with 54 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings. However, the Orioles had a very disappointing first half and were out of contention by the time the trading deadline rolled around. Just two days after Soto was traded to the New York Mets, it was Seranthony's turn to be traded, and on July 29th he was sent to the Toronto Blue Jays in return for a solid pitching prospect in Juaron Watts-Brown. The trade took place between games of a day/night doubleheader between the two teams and he appeared for the Jays in the nitecap, throwing a scoreless inning. He ended up being an excellent acquisition for the Jays, making 24 appearances and going 2-1 with an ERA of 3.00 in 21 innings, during which he allowed just 12 hits and 12 walks and struck out 25 batters. He was very busy in the postseason as he pitched 12 times over the three series the Blue Jays played, including 5 games of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the fateful Game 7 on November 1st, he followed Jeff Hoffman out of the bullpen after the Jays' closer had given up a game-tying homer in the 9th. Seranthony managed to hold down the Dodgers in the 10th, but it was far from a smooth inning as he gave up a hit and two walks, but managed to beat out Kiké Hernandez at first base on a grounder to 1B for the final out of the inning. He gave up just 1 run the World Series, but it came at a crucial time as he allowed a solo homer to Shohei Ohtani in the 7th inning that tied the game at 5, and there would not be another run until Freddie Freeman's walk-off homer in the bottom of the 18th inning. He was credited with a win in Game 4 of the Division Series against the New York Yankees, and another in Game 1 of the World Series.

Dominguez became a fre agent after the 2025 season and on January 23, 2026, came to an agreement on a two-year contract with the Chicago White Sox.
