Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Sam Smith played professionally from 2002 to 2006, peaking at Double-A.

He was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 19th round of the 2002 amateur draft and began his career that year. He was 1-4 with a 2.59 ERA and 9.7 K/9 IP ratio in 27 relief appearances for the Missoula Osprey in 2002 and 16-6 with a 3.83 mark in 27 starts for the South Bend Silver Hawks in 2003. He tied Jon Connolly for the Midwest League lead in victories and tied Drew Dickinson for the lead in shutouts (3). He tied T.A. Fulmer, Colt Griffin, Tony Peña and Juan Sandoval for second in starts, behind Dickinson's 28. His 185 hits were second, behind Sandoval's 190. He slipped to 7-10, 6.28 between two clubs in 2004 and by 2006 was in independent ball.

Overall, Smith went 38-33 with a 4.62 ERA in 158 games (75 starts). In 552 2/3 innings, he allowed 668 hits and 172 walks (1.520 WHIP), while striking out 343 batters.
