Biographical Information[edit]

Sam Shaw, a 5' 5" pitcher, broke in with the Baltimore Orioles of the American Association in 1888, then spent the rest of his professional career in the minor leagues, save for a brief stint in 1893 with the Chicago Colts of the National League, where he was one of the oldest pitchers on a staff that averaged 25 years of age. Shaw pitched only two games for the Colts, on June 13th and 16th (both Chicago wins), in which he allowed 9 HBP, two more than the modern era single season record of 7 HBP in a two-game span, by Tommy Byrne on July 5th and 14th, 1950, and by Doc Reisling on September 14th and 17th, 1904.

After baseball, he worked as a grocer in Baltimore, MD, then moved successively to Philadelphia, PA and Atlantic City, NJ. Through his daughter, Irene Brown, he was then traced to Upper Darby, PA, where he died in 1947.
