The Salem Angels began play in 1982 under manager Joe Maddon who won the Northwest League title in the team's first year. Prior to the Angels affiliation, the Salem Senators were an unaffiliated team in the Northwest League from 1977-1981. Some notable players who took the field for the Angels were Kirk McCaskill (1982), Dante Bichette (1984), Chuck Finley (1985), and Roberto Hernandez (1986). Salem became the Salem Dodgers in 1988.
