Biographical Information[edit]
Bob Wuesthoff was an outfielder in the minor leagues. He played for the Modesto Reds in 1950 and 1952, the Hutchinson Elks and Charleston Rebels in 1951, and the Waco/Longview Pirates and Visalia Stars in 1953.
Wuesthoff was born on May 25, 1926, in Alameda, CA. He attended San Jose State University, where he was later listed in the San Jose State Sports Hall of Fame for both baseball and men's basketball.[1]
After his playing career, Wuesthoff had a long career in athletics and education. He coached baseball and taught at Madera High School, then worked at Menlo Junior College and San Jose State University before moving to California State University, Long Beach.[2] He was head coach of the Long Beach State baseball program from 1964 to 1969, leading the 49ers to two California Collegiate Athletic Association titles and a 158–101–4 record.[3] His 1964 team won the program's first California Collegiate Athletic Association title, and his 1969 team finished first in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. He was honored as the NCAA District VII college Coach of the Year for his work with the 1964 team.[4]
Wuesthoff also served as an associate athletic director at Long Beach State and as interim athletics director during the 1969 football season. He co-founded the 49er Camp youth sports camp with Fred Miller and spent decades associated with the university.[2][3] He was inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987.[4] Wuesthoff died in Long Beach on July 12, 2013.[2]
