Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Randy McGarvey played in the Houston Astros system in 2002 and 2003 and in independent ball from 2004 to 2008. He was taken by Houston in the 26th round of the 2002 amateur draft, a few picks after pitcher Phil Coke.
He played for the Tri-City ValleyCats in both 2002 and 2003, hitting just 1 home run in 192 at-bats. In his first year of indy ball, 2004, he hit .306/.429/.432 with 3 home runs, 38 RBI and 44 walks in 65 games for the Washington Wild Things. He had another season of note in 2007, when he hit .355/.441/.460 with 5 home runs, 36 RBI and 38 walks in 89 games for the Camden Riversharks.
Overall, McGarvey hit .285/.390/.363 with 11 home runs, 148 RBI and 181 walks in 380 games. His father, Randy McGarvey Sr., played in the minors in 1969.
Prior to playing professionally, he was the 2001 Big South Conference Tournament MVP and was named to the All-Tournament Team. In the 2002 tournament, he was named to the All-Tournament Team.
