Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ox Miller played pro baseball from 1937 to 1954, spending parts of four seasons in the majors. Miller's most memorable game was probably a start of just 2 1/3 innings for the Chicago Cubs on September 7, 1947, as his 2nd-inning grand slam provided all of Chicago's runs in a 4 -3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. this was Miller's only game with an RBI in 24 major league contests. Miller and teammate Sam Zoldak are the last Browns/Orioles pitchers to record complete games in the first three or more starts of a career.
After his playing days, he returned to Texas and was a mail carrier for 34 years.
Jo-Jo Moore is remembered as the "Gause Ghost", because he was born in Gause, TX, but that shouldn't obscure that Ox Miller was also born there.
Ox Eckhardt is the only other major-leaguer with the nickname "Ox". Eckhardt was a legendary minor-league hitter, but the two Ox-es actually have several similarities, as both were born and died in Texas, both had 24-game major league careers, both had just two extra base hits (each had a home run and double), and both batted .182 in the season in which they posted their career highs in at-bats and plate appearances.
