Biographical Information[edit]
Mike Penney pitched in the Milwaukee Brewers system from 1998 to 2002. Though he reached Triple-A for part of two seasons, he never ascended to the majors.
He was taken by the club in the 8th round of the 1998 amateur draft (signed by scout Corey Rodriguez) and went 1-5 with a 7.38 ERA in 10 starts for the Helena Brewers his first season. In 1999, he tied multiple pitchers for second in the Midwest League with 12 losses, behind Andy Shibilo's 13. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2000, going 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA in 17 relief appearances for the Indianapolis Indians; he was 3-6, 3.16 in 50 games (13 starts) on the year as a whole. Perhaps his best campaign was his last, when he went 7-4 with a 2.34 ERA in 37 relief appearances for the Huntsville Stars in 2002.
He earned spots in the Arizona Fall League in 2000 and 2001, pitching for the Maryvale Saguaros both times. He was named the Brewers #8 prospect going into 2001 by Baseball America, between Kade Johnson and Horacio Estrada.
Overall, Penney went 28-33 with a 4.12 ERA in 167 games (60 starts). In 485 1/3 innings, he allowed 505 hits and 201 walks (1.455 WHIP), while striking out 327 batters. At Triple-A, he was 5-4 with a 4.90 ERA in 39 games (5 starts).
