Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Miguel Amaya was signed by the Chicago Cubs out of Panama on July 17, 2015. He began his pro career in 2016 with the DSL Cubs 2, where he hit .245 in 58 games. In 2017, he moved to the United States with the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, where in another 58 games, he hit .228 with 3 homers and 26 RBIs.

He took a big step forward in 2018, when he played full-season ball for the first time with the South Bend Cubs of the Midwest League. He was selected to play in the 2018 Futures Game for the World Team, and hit .256/.349/.403 in 116 games. He hit 21 doubles and 12 homers, scored 54 runs and drove in 52. He was named to the league's mid-season All-Star team and was also a Cubs organizational All-Star.

He was named to the roster of the National League team for the 2019 Futures Game. However, it took him another four seasons to make his major league debut for the Cubs, which came on May 4, 2023, as the starting catcher in a 4-3 loss to the Washington Nationals. He went 0 for 2 with a sacrifice fly in the game. He went on to hit .214 in 53 games for the Cubs, with 5 homers and 18 RBIs and an OPS+ of 90. In 2024, he became the Cubs' regular catcher, playing 117 games and batting .232 with 8 homers and 47 RBIs. While this production looks like an improvement over his rookie season, his OPS+ was actually lower, at 82.

He drove in the first run of the 2025 MLB season with a 2nd-inning double off Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the two-game season-opening series at the Tokyo Dome on March 18, 2025. His hit scored Dansby Swanson with the game's first run. The Cubs lost both games in Tokyo, but Miguel was the hero when they played their first game stateside, on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 27th. He drove in 5 runs in a 10-6 win thanks to a pair of doubles.
