Biographical Information

Outfielder Max Schuemann made his major league debut for the Oakland Athletics on April 12, 2024, as a pinch-runner for designated runner Seth Brown in the bottom of the 10th inning, after the Washington Nationals had failed to score in their half. After an intentional walk and a strikeout, he scored on a single by Lawrence Butler to give Oakland a 2-1 win. On June 26th he lost an RBI on a very rare call of baserunner interference. In the 2nd inning of a game against the Los Angeles Angels, with Armando Alvarez on second and Kyle McCann at first, he hit a double on which Alvarez scored easily, but McCann stumbled on his way to home plate and missed touching it. Alvarez pointed out the mistake to his teammate, but in doing so helped to steady him and turn him around so that he could retouch the plate. Home plate umpire John Bacon saw the whole thing and called McCann out and nullified his run, as a player is not supposed to physically assist a baserunning teammate in any manner. The exceedingly rare call thus deprived Max of a second RBI on the play, and Oakland went on to lose the game, 5-2. All three players involved had made their debut that season. In all, he batted .220 in 133 games his rookie season, with 7 homers and 34 RBIs for an OPS+ of 82. He was mainly a shortstop that year, with 93 games at the position, but also played 27 games at third base and saw some action at second base and all three outfield positions.

Schuemann was drafted by Oakland in the 20th round of the 2018 amateur draft, out of Eastern Michigan University; he was signed by scout Rich Sparks. In the minors, he out up some decent batting averages over the years, usually in the .270 range, but with limited power. It took him until the 2023 season to hit double digits in home runs, and he hit precisely 10 that year.

In 2025, with rookie Jacob Wilson now starting at shortstop with the A's, who had moved to a temporary home in West Sacramento, CA in the off-season, Max was a true utility infielder, with 39 games at 2B, 27 at 3B and 24 at SS, in addition to all three outfield spots. Unfortunately he also hit like a prototypical utility infielder that year, ending up at .197 in 101 games, with 2 homers and 13 RBIs, for an OPS+ of 60. On February 9, 2026, he was traded to the New York Yankees in return for minor leaguer Luis Burgos.
