Biographical Information[edit]

Makoto Sato pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 12 years.

Sato was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in the 5th round of the 1993 NPB draft, but he spent his first 7 seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues; he only pitched 5 games combined with the big club. He was sent to the Daiei Hawks in 2001, and he pitched 8 games with a 5.40 ERA that season. Sato had a 1.42 ERA in 7 games in 2002, and he recorded a 2.98 ERA in 31 games in 2003. He pitched 2/3 of a shutout inning in 2003 Nippon Series Game 4, and the Hawks beat the Hanshin Tigers in 7 games. Sato's ERA was 3.74 in 40 games in 2004, and he collected 4 holds with a 3.46 ERA in 27 games in 2005. He only pitched 17 games with a 2.32 ERA in 2006, and his ERA rose to 4.08 in 27 games in 2007. He struggled in the next two seasons, and his ERA was 5.19 in 22 games and 6.56 in 25 games respectively. Sato announced his retirement after staying in the minors in 2010.

Overall, Sato was 16-8 with a 4.14 ERA, collected 18 holds and a save in 209 appearances, struck out 145 and pitched 239 1/3 innings in 12 seasons in NPB.
