- Bats Right, Throws Right
Biographical Information[edit]
Lorena Medrano was the first pitcher in the history of the Dominican women's national team, as the 17-year-old started their 2018 debut against Argentina and helping beat Argentina. [1] The Dominicans won a spot in the 2018 Women's Baseball World Cup. She started their second game; after Marlenny Quero took the hill against defending champion Japan, José Canó turned to the young right-hander to face Australia, the 2014 Bronze Medalists. She allowed a leadoff hit to Shae Lillywhite then struck out Natalie House; she wound up going 5 2/3 IP, allowing nine hits, four walks and six runs (three earned) while striking out three to outduel Brittany Hepburn; Angelo Burgos relieved and got the first win for a Dominican team in a Women's Baseball World Cup. Medrano allowed only one run in 5 1/3 IP against Silver Medal winner Taiwan, dueling Yu-Ying Hsieh evenly. She finished the tourney with a 2.15 ERA, second on the team behind Carla Minier, and had done so facing strong competition. [2]
During the 2022 Women's Baseball Americas World Cup Qualifier, she fell to 0-2, 7.88, losing to Mexico's Samaria Benítez and Puerto Rico's Janiliz Rivera. She tied Burgos, Mayumis Solano and Wendys Gonzalez for the tourney lead in losses, tied Solano and Rivera for the most mound starts (3), was 8th in IP (10 2/3), tied Solano for the most runs allowed (17), trailed Solano for second in earned runs (12, 2 behind Yanet Cruz), was second with 9 walks (8 behind Cruz) and tied Oriannys Hernández for 8th with 7 strikeouts.
