Biographical Information[edit]
Lance Dickson was the 1st round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 1990 amateur draft, taken out of the University of Arizona with the 23rd overall pick. Three years earlier, he had been selected by the Houston Astros in the 37th round of the 1987 amateur draft after graduating from Grossmont High School in El Cajon, CA, but he elected to go to college instead of signing with Houston.
Dickson was the owner of a great curve ball. He debuted in the majors only two months after being drafted, the first player from his draft class to do so. He pitched 3 games in the majors that August, each one a little worse than the one before. He was charged with a loss in each of these three starts, allowing 12 runs on 20 hits in 13 2/3 innings, for an ERA of 7.24. In the off-season he had surgery on his arm, and struggled in the minors through 1995, never re-appearing in the majors.
