Lambuth University was founded as the Memphis Conference Female Institute in 1843 and was known as Lambuth College from 1923-1991. The school ceased operations in June 2011 following several years of financial difficulties. During the summer of 2011, The University of Memphis acquired the Lambuth University campus and began offering four-year degrees there on August 29, 2011. The campus is now known as The University of Memphis - Lambuth Campus.

On April 29, 2005, in the first round of the Mid-South Conference tournament, Lambuth played a 22 inning game against Pikeville College, setting an NAIA record. [1]
