Kurt Krieger, a European immigrant, was thought to be the only major league born in Austria, although later research uncovered that Dutch Ulrich, who preceded him to the majors, was also born there. He pitched nine seasons 1944 to 1954, one in college, two in the Major Leagues and nine in the minors, losing two years to the Military.
He was in the Armed Forces during World War II (1945-1946) (GB). He attended Washington University in Saint Louis in 1946 at the same time as Bill Jennings. He had two cups of coffee for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1949 and 1951. He then became the St. Louis Cardinals batting practice pitcher until he died at age 43 from cancer at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Krieger is buried at Sunset Memorial Park in Affton, MO.
