Biographical Information[edit]

Koji Bonishi played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 12 years.

Bonishi signed with the Daiei Hawks after he went undrafted in the 1990 NPB draft, and he mainly stayed in the minors in his first four seasons as the Hawks already had star catcher Koichiro Yoshinaga. He only got 57 at-bats combined in this period, and he finally got some chances when Yoshinaga was injured in 1995. Bonishi shared the starting spot with Toru Kawagoe, and he played 54 games with a .167/.213/.196 batting line. He returned to the minors after Yoshinaga returned, and he got 57 at-bats combined in the next four seasons. Bonishi played 74 games with a .258/.291/.344 batting line as the backup behind Kenji Johjima, and he was 12-for-63 in 2001. He went 12-for-63 again in 2002, and he announced his retirement. Bonishi later coached the independent Kochi Fighting Dogs in 2005, and he was a broadcaster for FOX sport.

Overall, Bonishi hit .208/.256/.260 with 104 hits and 3 homers in 12 seasons in NPB.
