Biographical Information[edit]

Kenji Doi played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years.

Doi was drafted by the Lotte Orions in the 4th round of the 1969 NPB draft, and he spent his first two seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues; he only got 13 at-bats combined for the big club. He had a solid .362/.412/.468 batting line in 44 games in 1972, and he hit .269/.367/.410 in 78 games in 1973. Doi then recorded a .265/.330/.373 batting line in 66 games in 1974, and he went 3-for-7 in the 1974 Nippon Series. The Orions beat the Chunichi Dragons in 6 games. Doi shared the starting catcher spot in 1975 with Kimiyasu Murakami, and he had a .258/.301/.404 batting line in 94 games.

The Toyama native played 90 games with a .298/.321/.369 batting line in 1976, but he lost his spot when Hiroshi Takahashi shined in 1977. Doi only got 47 appearances with a .242/.282/.333 batting line, and he batted .272/.291/.352 in 1978. He then recorded a .282/.309/.420 batting line in 1979, and he improved to .311/.356/.466 in 1980. Therefore, he got the starting catcher spot in 1981, and he played 104 games with a .265/.338/.403 batting line. However, Doi slumped to .162/.230/.216 in 1982, and he lost the competition with Hidetoshi Hakamada. He hit .241/.306/.321 in 95 games in 1983, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Doi hit .268/.318/.382 with 497 hits and 44 homers in 14 seasons in NPB.
